About Fireflies at Dusk
Photinus carolinus, the synchronous firefly of the Great Smoky Mountains, is one of the few North American species whose males flash in unison, and the park runs a lottery for parking passes to see it. The light comes from luciferin reacting with an enzyme called luciferase inside the abdomen, and it's a cold light, with almost no heat given off. Males flash as they fly, while females down on a blade of grass or a low leaf answer with a flash of their own, timed to the second. Females of some Photuris species have learned to copy another species' reply, then eat the male that comes calling. Adults live only a few weeks.
