About Hannah
Hannah's story, told in the opening chapters of 1 Samuel, is one of the most intimate portraits of prayer in all of Scripture, a woman so deep in grief and longing that her lips moved but no sound came out, and the priest Eli mistook her anguish for something else entirely. She had made a vow: if God gave her a son, she would give him back. When Samuel was born, she kept that promise, bringing the child she had waited and wept for to the temple at Shiloh and leaving him in service to the Lord. The song she sang afterward, full of reversals, of the lowly lifted and the proud brought low, echoes centuries later in Mary's own Magnificat, two mothers of miracle children praising the same faithful God.
