About George Washington
George Washington led a ragged Continental Army through the brutal winter at Valley Forge in 1777–78, emerging with a force tempered enough to win independence. He presided over the Constitutional Convention in 1787, then served two terms as the nation's first president, setting precedents that shaped the office for every successor. At Mount Vernon, his beloved Virginia estate above the Potomac, he returned to the life of a farmer and gentleman, earning the enduring title "Father of His Country."
