About Mount Rushmore
High in the Black Hills of South Dakota, sculptor Gutzon Borglum and his crew spent fourteen years, from 1927 to 1941, blasting and chiseling four presidents into a granite cliff face nearly 5,700 feet above sea level. Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln were chosen to represent the nation's founding, growth, preservation, and expansion. The monument draws nearly three million visitors a year, yet the mountain itself dwarfs every human ambition, the carved faces alone stand sixty feet tall.
