About The Drum Kit

At the back of every jazz ensemble, half-hidden in shadow, the drummer holds the whole thing together. A well-placed rimshot can lift a soloist like a hand under the elbow, while wire brushes swept across a snare head turn a standard into something almost conversational. The drum kit as we know it, kick pedal, hi-hat, ride and crash cymbals all played by one person, took shape in the early twentieth century, born from the demands of crowded theater pits where a single musician had to cover what an entire percussion section once did.

How to play
