About Jazz Saxophonists

The saxophone was patented by Adolphe Sax in Paris in 1846, and it took about eighty years to find its real home in American jazz. Coleman Hawkins made the tenor a serious solo voice in the 1920s and 30s, and Lester Young answered with a lighter, drier sound that players still argue over. Then came Charlie Parker's alto at breakneck speed, and after him Coltrane, who could play a single chord for an hour and make you want more.

How to play

  1. 1
