About Billie Holiday
Eleanora Fagan was born in 1915 and grew up to be Billie Holiday, the singer who could make a pop tune sound like a private confession. She wore gardenias in her hair, sang in Harlem rooms and 52nd Street clubs, and bent a melody the way a horn player would. Her best small-group sides, with Teddy Wilson and later with Lester Young on tenor, still sound like two people talking quietly across a table.
